Smiles" campaign by dentists

LAWRENCEVILLE, March 12, 2002 -- These days you have
an opportunity for you to "brighten" your smile and make
a lasting contribution and impression on the American Cancer Society.
As an official corporate sponsor, our office of Family Dentistry
in Lawrenceville has organized its second annual "Brighter
Smiles for Brighter Futures" campaign to raise money for the
Gwinnett Relay for Life event to fight cancer.
The ninth annual Gwinnett Relay for Life, now the nation's largest
such fund raiser, will take place on May 17-18, 2002. This year
the goal is to raise $2 million, say Nancy Stanbery-Kellam, and
Joslyn Bacalis, co-chairs of the event.
Last year "Brighter Smiles" effort raised $23,000 for
the local cancer society and the Relay for Life. Our goal in 2002
is to exceed those monies collected last year. In 2001, the Gwinnett
County Relay for Life collected more money ($1.8 million) than any
other Relay event in the nation.
The "Brighter Smiles for Brighter Futures" campaign recruits
dentists to help raise funds for the Gwinnett Relay for Life. This
year Dr. Ralph Lehr of Chamblee and a second dentist (who wishes
to remain anonymous) have joined our team.
If the local campaign is successful, it is hoped that the "Brighter
Smiles for Brighter Futures" can be duplicated in other relays
throughout the country.
All participating dentists will offer free home tooth whitening
for anyone who donates $200 (or $100 per tooth arch) or more to
the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life." One does
not have to be a patient of record of the dentists in order to participate.
The participating dentist will complete a free screening exam to
ensure that tooth whitening is appropriate for the individual. The
participating offices will be donating all of their time and supplies
to help in this team effort.
With vital tooth whitening, the patient is custom fitted with a
soft tray in which a whitening agent is placed. The tooth-whitening
agent has, as its chief ingredient, carbimide peroxide, which removes
stains from deep within the tooth. Independent studies have shown
vital tooth whitening to be both safe and effective. Vital tooth
whitening is done at a person's home and takes approximately four
weeks to complete.
The "Brighter Smiles for Brighter Futures" campaign began
February 15, and will conclude at the end of the Gwinnett County
Relay for Life event, which is on May 17-18. Monies will be collected
for the Gwinnett chapter of the American Cancer Society up to and
during the Relay event.
Persons interested in beautifying their smile, and at the same
time, helping those in need, should call Tracie Manning at Dr. Carter's
office at 770-995-7616 or call Betty Dalton at Dr. Ralph Lehr's
office at 770-939-7168. Together, we can help those suffering from
the effects of cancer have a "Brighter" future.
