FEEDBACK
3/29: Spilling
the beans on Chattanooga
Editor, the Forum:
Yes, Chattanooga is a great get-away location. And a dinner cruise
on the river boat is enjoyable. Then the downtown "railroad"
hotel is a place I've been going to for about six years. Now you've
"spilled the beans" and advertised the opportunity to
all these other folk.

3/29: Takes exception
with labels on categories
Editor, the Forum::
In your article "NEARBY REINVIGORATED CHATTANOOGA OFFERS WEALTH
OF EXCITING ATTRACTIONS" you mentioned a wealth of interesting
adventures for tourists. However, I take exception with your categories
"Gal Getaways" and "For Guys."
Maybe I've lived in the nation's capitol for too long, but I happen
to like baseball - - both minor and major league - - and take exception
to it being a "guy" activity. If we still existed in an
Anthony Trollope world, perhaps your categories would hold water,
but women are no longer prized for their "accomplishments,"
nor should they be relegated to sculpture gardens and quaint B&B's.

3/26: We might as
well have seen this one coming
Editor, the Forum:
Don't know if anyone else has made this observation, but I've always
heard...are you ready???
Neither a BARRower nor a LINDER be...!!

3/22: Deadline approaching
for leadership institute applicants
Editor:
The Gwinnett Neighborhood Leadership Institute is now recruiting
for its 2002-2003 community Leadership Training Program, kicking
off in late August. Training is provided for Gwinnett citizens interested
in learning more about resources available in the community so that
they can take a more active role in community affairs.
Classes meet one Saturday a month for nine consecutive months.
Monthly topics include government, crime prevention, health, education,
economics, community growth and working with the media. The program
begins with an orientation and followed by a two-day kickoff retreat
at Simpsonwood Conference and Retreat Center in Norcross. Students
will select from various community projects as part of their training.
Deadline for applications is approaching. The 2002-2003 class begins
in July. Further information can be found at the website www.gnli.org.

3/19: A 55-word short
story
"The sun broke over the tree line like a flashy guest at a
somber wake. Madison groaned, slid deeper within the soothing warmth
of the soft down comforter, and contemplated the dreadful mission
du jour: informing her most important clients that a once-robust
pension portfolio had evaporated like the dew of a hot summer morning."
-- Betsy Neal, Riverdale, Ga.
3/15: Brings logic
to hockey team name discussion
Editor, the Forum:
The only logical nickname for the new hockey team is the Gwinnett
Puckers. (Don't point at me! I didn't name the small rubber disc
they hit!) Now if one drives a truck he's a "trucker".
If one flies a plane he's a "flyer". Do you see a pattern?
I think it would strike fear in some opponents while others might
not see it that way. If this name comes true, one must guard the
billboards advertising the team or else suffer the fate the now
defunct Northlake restaurant, Mother Tucker's, did for pranksters
and graffiti artists.
-- Howard Williams, Snellville
3/12: Says recent
picture in Forum is beautiful, scenic
Editor, the Forum:
What a beautiful and scenic piece of land the county acquired recently
on Ga. 124 and Sugarloaf! What a beautiful and scenic photo you
included in the Forum! If Snellville will annex up to the southern
boundary one could add billboards to the view!
-- Howard Williams, Snellville
3/12: Finds himself
in similar spot as item in Forum
Editor, the Forum:
About the recent item on brothers marrying girls with the same
first name:
My wife's name is Sandra Ingram Jones. My brother, Bob, wife's name
is
Sandra Schramm Jones. Talk about confusing around the Thanksgiving
dinner
table!
-- Otis Jones, Lawrenceville
3/12: Old-fashioned
names more to his liking
Editor, the Forum:
Our minor league hockey team needs Georgia or Atlanta in front of
its moniker. Call me old-fashioned, but I like 'Georgia Crackers"
or "Atlanta Crackers," which was also a baseball team,
correct? It may not be PC, but it works for me.
-- Brian Luders, Duluth
3/8: ABOUT LINDER,
BARR, McKINNEY AND SHARPTON
Editor, the Forum:
These are interesting times that we live in. John Linder is very
popular in this area (as you know), Bob Barr has more name recognition.
Barr has been modifying some of his rhetoric and has taken an uncharacteristic
approach to some of the overreaction that the government has done
since 9/11.
It's hard to tell if he truly is becoming a little more moderate.
I seriously doubt that either one of them will withdraw (too much
ego?) from the district race.
What I would like to see is someone who could seriously challenge
Cynthia McKinney (who will still run in part of Gwinnett in the
new reapportionment) and sandbag her. I don't see it happening in
my lifetime. It is also interesting to see Al Sharpton stirring
things up. He is someone that the Democratic Party can do without.

3/8: HOW ABOUT NAMING
HOCKEY TEAM WITH THIS NAME
Editor, the Forum:
There could only be one name for our team: Gwinnett Success!
-- Eddie Copeland, Duluth
3/8: SCENIC HIGHWAY
LAND WILL BE BALL FIELDS
Editor, the Forum:
The purchase of the 90 acres of pasture land on Scenic Highway
from the Alexander estate will not be actual green space. I don't
think there is any way to give the commission credit as such. Instead,
it will be used as ball fields. The distinction should be made between
true green space and other uses.
-- Mary Louise Stark, Lawrenceville
3/5: Considering enlarging
City Hall
Editor, the Forum:
We in Berkeley Lake are currently exploring the possibilities of
enlarging the current city hall or building a new one on the other
side of the city park. Not decided yet.
-- Lois Salter, Berkeley Lake
(Ms. Sawyer is mayor of Berkeley Lake.)
3/5: Suggest another
name for hockey team
Editor, the Forum:
Gwinnett Buttons? Ugh, I hope not! And our "Gwinnett Buttons"
score a hat trick and thousands of buttons get thrown on the ice?
Something indigenous to the area. The "Gwinnett Mallers",
God knows we have enough malls. What's one more, eh?
-- Paul Coyne, Peachtree Corners
3/5: Name alone would
be asking for trouble
Editor, the Forum:
Yikes!! "The Gwinnett Buttons"? These poor guys are just
asking to get beat up! Reminds me of "Cute as a Button".
I don't think this is a good name for a sport that reeks of testosterone
and tough guys. "Oh look, it's the little Buttons!"
Also, think about all the other possible ridicule, like abbreviations..
"GO Butt's" (or worse!). I don't know; it's just too cute.
In choosing a name I suggest we think about the "IMPACT"
we want to make. What are the adjectives you want someone to feel
after hearing the name? In my mind the name should conjure up feelings
of strength, pride, innovation and winning. "Button" just
doesn't hit those impact points.
I try to make it a policy not to gripe unless I can propose a solution.
I will contemplate the arrival of this hockey team and respond soon
with some names to consider.
-- Kelly Green, Buford
3/1: Saw first-hand
beam on student's face
Editor, the Forum:
I applaud your inclusion of Katrina Blankenship's article
regarding Valentine's Day in her classroom. As room-mom, I just
happened to be there at that moment distributing cookies to the
class and I was filled with humor and elation at the ongoing exchange
of cards among the classmates.
The little boy who handed out the Hallmark cards was positively
beaming by the end of the exchange and I left feeling the this "Random
Act of Kindness", not only from him, but his classmates, including
my daughter, was one people should know about.
And I can only tell so many people before it kind of dwindles down.
There are so many horrific stories in the news, and we rarely hear
about the good things in life, of which there are an abundance.
So thanks, from this proud mom for hopefully giving something for
people to smile, and even tear up about.

3/1: Enjoys recent
school, Olympics articles
Editor, the Forum:
THANK YOU #1: as a proud employee of Gwinnett County Schools -
Facilities and Operations Division, your very kind recognition of
the Oglethorpe Award received this past month was appreciated. We
know that every job in this division is an important job, and we
were ALL included in the continuous improvement steps taken to realize
this award. We are bonding as a professional family and look forward
to always being the best school system possible.
THANK YOU #2: the article on the beautiful participation at the
Men's Gold Medal Figure Skating at the Olympics was so very accurate.
My husband and I were lucky enough to attend that same competition
(we were much higher than the first row) and saw exactly the same
level of beauty and competence from all the skaters. Even now, I
fight tears when I remember the Chinese who refused to give up when
the crowd became his motivation to finish his performance. The entire
evening was inspiring, and one in which I felt so privileged to
behold. The entire Olympic experience in Salt Lake City was spectacular,
and memorable. What lucky Georgians we were to be part of the experience.
Thank you for your articles. I appreciate receiving them.
