FEEDBACK
8/27: Official returns
slow in being posted
Editor, the Forum:
Just thought you'd like to know that the AJC had the results of
Tuesday's primary posted in all the counties by 3 a.m.
.
As of 1 p.m. the NEXT day!? The Secretary of State site (Cathy Cox)
still did not have the final results posted.

Feels strike would
really hurt baseball
Editor, the Forum:
I hope the major league players do strike. Before the game tonight
on the pregame show, Don Sutton was receiving a lot of calls from
irate fans and all were fed up with the greedy players.Although
Greg Maddux is a great pitcher, I didn't realize that he makes 13
million dollars a year! This is outrageous!
I am not a Braves fan, but do enjoy watching them play on TV. I
also learned that the average player's salary is $2.4 million a
year! I believe that if they do strike this time, it will kill major
league baseball.

Do you realize what
some liquids cost these days?
Editor, the Forum: You think a gallon
of gas is expensive? Check other fluids. - Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19
-- $9.52 per gallon.
- Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 -- $10 .00 per gallon.
- Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 -- $10.17 per gallon.
- Diet Snapple
16 oz $1.29 -- $10.32 per gallon.
- Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 -- $25.42 per
gallon.
- Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 -- $33.60 per gallon.
- Scope
1.5 oz $0.99 -- $84.48 per gallon.
- Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 -- $123.20
per gallon.
- Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 -- $178.13 per gallon.
This
is a REAL KICKER...... Evian water 9 oz for $1.49., or $21.19 per gallon. $21.19
FOR WATER and the buyers don't even know the source! So, the next time
you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, Whiteout, PEPTO
BISMOL or NYQUIL!!!! Just a little humor to help ease the pain of your
next trip to the pump.

Comments on Bush "War Talk"
are right on target Editor, the Forum: Your comments
on Bush's "war talk" were right on target.
The thought of our attacking Iraq scares me to death. I can see nothing to
be gained by such an indiscriminate action. -- The Rev. Bill Crosland,
Sugar Hill * * * * Editor, the Forum: I agree with you
100 percent on President Bush not leading this country into attacking Iraq. While
there is nothing I would like better than to see Iraq's leader "taken out,"
we cannot declare war on a nation nor interfere with its sovereignty when it has
not directly done so to us. Your point about us not "taking out"
Russia in the Cold War, when they, too, had nuclear capability, and could have
tried to annihilate us at any time, is right on the money. We must be vigilant
and aware of what's going on in order to protect ourselves but we cannot go to
war with every country that has a government with which we disagree. Our young
men and women are too precious. -- Barbara Grastat, Lawrenceville *
* * * * Editor, the Forum: I am happy to see your opinion
about attacking Iraq in writing. I do not presume to know what is the right course
of action. It does seem to me that there is some unfinished business from Daddy
Bush's administration that George W. is expecting to finish. The first President
Bush was criticized for not finishing Sadam off. My concern is that the need to
attack Iraq stems from personal needs (Bush and his advisors) rather than a national
need. It is also interesting to me that we proclaim our intention to launch
a "surprise attack" - maybe in October. My definition of surprise is
different from that of the Bush administration. In my opinion, too much talk and
no action does not enhance our image as a world leader. -- Betsy Pickern,
Duluth * * * * * Editor, the Forum: I don't know who
your readers are. I can only assume they are a cross section of Gwinnettians.
If so, then you will surely catch the devil for today's column, which, by the
way, I think it was "right on." However, most in Gwinnett seem to be
so enamored of Bush they would applaud suspension of elections if it were proposed
by him and Cheney and, of course, if it were designed to protect us from the Liberals. Your
piece on Barr running in the seventh district was echoed by that paragon of moral
authority, Mike Bowers. Seriously, I believe Bowers is now a politically astute
person, unelectable as he is. Hypocrisy never has played well with the American
public. It may succeed briefly but usually backfires on the individual. --

Laughs remembering old voting techniques Editor, the Forum: I
laughed my head off while reading your first voting recollection! My parents are
from Hartwell and Hart County, Ga. My grandparents, J.C. and Sallie Mae Temple
(Temple Gin Co.), were wonderful characters of my childhood. I recall clearly
being sent into the voting booth with my grandmother to fill out her ballot. Once
complete, I was often instructed to take in my aunt, who was challenged with Down's
Syndrome, to cast her vote as well. My dad tells me that he came back from
the military to find that he had never missed an election... his Uncle Alfred
Atkinson of Reed Creek took care of it for him. It was so good to read your story
and be transported back in time. * * * * * I have another
thought for you on how things have changed. My teenage sons can now be reached
at all times by me. I simply e-mail their cell phones and they receive a text
message, often responding back (I receive an e-mail) even while sitting in the
movie theater (their phone is on silent). Big Brother is watching, well, in this
case, Big Mother. No response gets swift action from parents, mama waiting at
the door. -- Kelly Herndon, Lawrenceville 8/9:
Many factors make Mountain Park a great area Editor, the Forum:
As a nearly 20 year resident of Mountain Park, I was happy to see the great
story about our community (Forum, July 30). Realizing the many factors that make
up the community, I would like to highlight some additional amenities that make
Mountain Park a nice place to call home - Mountain Park Park and Pool (new pool
soon), Parkview Cluster, and the Mountain Park Branch of the Gwinnett County Library.
So, my thanks! - - Cindy Murphy, Mountain Park 8/6:
Outsiders exercise free speech but not Snellvillians Editor,
the Forum: You've heard some of my comments about the billboard controversy
in Snellville as far as eye pollution goes. I'll not take a single, terrible,
incident as happened yesterday and dwell on the safety issue. Heck, the men were
safer on the sign than they were getting to it on Scenic Highway, Ronald Reagan
Parkway, or U.S. 78! The citizens of Snellville through our elected representatives
passed a new sign ordinance in 1993 stating what we would and would not allow
within the city limits. This past year we were told by the federal court it didn't
matter what we wanted: outsiders could exercise free speech in Snellville but
we couldn't! I'm going to continue to exercise my right to voice my opinion
by not patronizing the advertisers nor the businesses where the signs are located
and tell them why I'll not spend a dime in their establishment until the signs
come down. If we can't control it by vote, let's do it by boycott. -
- Howard N. Williams, Jr., Snellville, Ga. (Whose city motto is "Striving
for the Highest" and it doesn't mean a billboard!) WHAT'S
