The Gwinnett Remembrance Coalition, in partnership with the City of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, the Gwinnett Historical Restoration and Preservation Board, and the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) of Montgomery, Ala., will dedicate a historical marker. It will honor the memory of Charles Hale, an African American resident of Gwinnett County, who was lynched in 1911 on the Lawrenceville courthouse square.
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $2.07 billion budget for 2022, up 8.1 percent from last year. The newly approved budget does not require a millage rate increase. The adopted spending plan consists of a $1.6 billion operating budget and a $455 million capital improvements budget, which includes funds from the County’s voter-approved SPLOST program.
On December 18, National Wreaths Across America Day 2021, a fresh balsam wreath from Maine was laid on every veteran’s grave during a rainy ceremony at East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceville. Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful (GC&B) invites neighbors in Gwinnett County to dream of a Green Christmas this year. Rather than placing their live Christmas tree by the curb after the holidays to decompose in a landfill, the eco-friendly organization encourages citizens to take part in one of the largest “treecycling” events in Georgia – Bring One for the Chipper 2022. In preparation for the big day when all collected trees will be chipped into mulch at Bethesda Park on January 29, GC&B has issued a call for volunteers and has released a list of collection sites where Gwinnettians can drop off their live trees between December 26, 2021 and January 24, 2022.
Gwinnett County Department of Health is encouraging residents to get the Covid vaccine shots, or the boosters, by offering $100 Visa gift cards, while supplies last. The cards are available to people ages 5 and up who receive a COVID-19 vaccine at community-wide vaccine incentive events this weekend. Partners in the program, besides Health Department, include Piedmont Eastside, Emergent Testing and COVID Care Georgia.
