FOCUS: WIN cites progress made in electing women to political office

By Melita Easters, Georgia’s WIN List, Atlanta, Ga. | As citizens vote early in record numbers, women will be the deciding factor as polls and political pundits increasingly predict Georgians will vote blue for the first time since 1992.

This shift is not entirely unpredictable. Legislative seats and private sector leadership positions held by women are leading indicators for a strong Georgia progressive streak. This is obscured by the fact that all statewide offices, the majority of congressional seats and House and Senate majorities are held by Republicans, who in Georgia are predominantly pale and male.

BRACK: Here are GwinnettForum’s endorsements in the 2016 Georgia elections

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | While the national election has been relatively active, one like we have never seen before, the local scene has been relatively quiet. Though there are several local contests, all-in-all, there’s still little major political activity on the local front.

We had 43 candidates visit in our offices this year, though several have failed to spend time with us, and therefore, we cannot consider recommending their candidacy. We regret that they did not come by, for we know little about them or their candidacy. We figure the onus is on them.

BRACK: The way Kareem Abdul-Jabbar looks at voter registration drives

By Elliott Brack, editor and publisher | The concerted efforts by many politicians to have voter registration drives seeks to get more participation in our democracy by citizens who so far don’t vote.

On the surface, it seems a reasonable move.

But not to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the former UCLA and Milwaukee Bucks basketball star, who was once known as Lew Alcindor. The other day on National Public Radio we heard him explaining why he thinks such voter registration drives are not a good idea. You may be surprised at the way he reasons …

WILSON: Both right and left are dissatisfied with establishment politics

By George Wilson | Everywhere we look, the middle class is squeezed by employers who shrink benefits and pay, eliminate jobs, and fear-pressure their staff to work illegally without overtime pay. The redistribution of income to the top one percent continues unabated. Student loans in the U.S. are choking our future. Medical bankruptcies darken the days of those who most need some light. Some things are very wrong in this country, and these are principally the same things that work well for our peers in Europe and Canada.
